Gerrittsen Beach Fire Department

Gerrittsen Beach

Volunteer Fire Department

The Gerrittsen Beach Fire Department was founded a century ago in 1922. Since that time the organization has grown to include 30 dedicated volunteers who operate a fleet of four fire and ems apparatus, which may soon include a new fire engine, on more than 500 calls per year.

We are the only volunteer fire department located in Brooklyn, NY, and serve to protect life and property in the community of Gerrittsen Beach. Our firehouse and training center are located on Seba Ave. If you would like to join our volunteer family in the fire and rescue service, we would be delighted to give you more information.

Our History

The original firehouse was built around 1922 on the corner of Seba Avenue and Frank Court in conjunction with the Gerrittsen Beach Original Property Owners Association. Under the laws of the State of New York, New York City Mayor John F. O’Brien approved the department as a Fire Corporation in 1932. Eventually the Gerrittsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department became a separate organization; as it had always been self-sustaining. From occupying a small garage with enough room for an engine and meetings, the volunteer fire department has grown over the years to owning a fleet of four vehicles, with its own firehouse, and responds to more than 500 calls for help annually.
